THE HISTORY OF THE BROWN COUNTY ART GUILD
As early as 1870, artists traveled to Nashville for the breathtaking scenery that would soon become known as “Peaceful Valley”. Despite the difficulties of primitive living in the hills of Southern Indiana, artists came from far and wide to paint and enjoy the scenery. Some worked closely together and created a great camaraderie where they could capture the beautiful landscapes the area had to offer, eventually establishing Brown County as a premiere art colony throughout Europe and the United States.
It wasn’t until April 1925 that the Brown County Art Association was incorporated. Carl Graf (originally from Bedford) served as its president and later went on to be the president of Brown County Art Guild, Inc., which was formed by Marie Goth, V.J Cariani, Carl Graf, Genevieve Goth Graf, Curry
Bohm, Dale Bessire, Georges LaChance and other notable artists.
The Brown County Art Guild resides in the historic Minor House, which was built in 1857 and purchased by the Guild 1954. By 1969, Genevieve, Carl, and V.J had all passed away, leaving Marie with an impressive collection of paintings from their estates. When Marie passed away in 1975, she left the majority of the estate to the Brown County Art Guild. The permanent collection of her own artwork as well as many pieces from her close friends is featured as a collection, per her request, in the Upper Gallery in order to preserve and honor their memories. After extensive renovation, the beautiful gallery that exists today is a direct result of Marie’s thoughtful legacy.
With more than forty local and regional artist members, the Brown County Art Guild proudly features new themed exhibits in the Upper Gallery bi-monthly. The Guild participates in the Village Art Walks on fourth Fridays (4-7 pm) where artists often hold demonstrations or talks. The Guild also conducts tours, workshops and artist demonstrations throughout the year.
The Guild takes pride in maintaining the Marie Goth Estate Collection and is committed to its mission: to exhibit and preserve works of art from the Marie Goth Collection; to exhibit works of art created by past and present guild artist members; and to cultivate fine art appreciation and education. In 1985, The Indiana State House recognized Brown County as “a historic and current center of art in Indiana,” and stated The Brown County Art Guild and The Brown County Art Gallery Association “have contributed much to preserving the heritage of Brown County as a center for art and artists.”
